“A black man who spent more than 16 years in prison for a false conviction in Florida was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy in Georgia after he stopped his vehicle to check it,” the agency said in a statement.

Leonard Allen Cure, 53, was sentenced to life in prison for robbing a pharmacy in 2003, according to media reports.

An expert commission later revealed the man’s alibi, which the court had previously disregarded, and Cure was released in 2020.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) reported that when Cure’s vehicle was stopped for inspection in the state, the man became aggressive. The officer allegedly tried to calm him down with a baton and stun gun, but he continued to resist, and the sheriff then opened fire on Cure.

He was previously sentenced to 22.5 years in prison prisoner Derek Chauvin, the police officer who killed African American George Floyd during his arrest in May 2020. He pleaded guilty to abuse of office.

Floyd’s death sparked a huge public outcry movement Black Lives Matter, which stands against racism and violence against black people.
