American scientists from the Rutgers Brain Health Institute in New Jersey examined the connection between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the likelihood of developing dementia in adults. To work published In the scientific journal JAMA Network Open.

They concluded that having ADHD increased the risk of developing dementia threefold compared to people without a diagnosis.

The study is based on analysis of data collected from more than 100 thousand people from 2003 to 2020.

ADHD in adults may manifest as a neurological process that reduces the ability to compensate for the effects of cognitive decline later in life, scientists say.

Additionally, scientists suggest that treating ADHD with psychostimulants may help reduce the risk of dementia in adults, as psychostimulants are known to alleviate the effects of cognitive impairment.

But future research should look more thoroughly at the effects of medications on ADHD patients and how they might affect dementia risk, the researchers said.
