Experts from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have increased the efficiency in processing new generation polymer composites. socialbites.ca was informed about this by the press service of the scientific institution.
Polymer composites are used in the production of parts for gas turbine engines, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and shell tubes. Typically, such elements are finished mechanically using blades, but this approach is associated with high costs when creating complex grooves and technological holes.
Scientists from PNRPU have proposed an alternative in the form of electrical discharge processing; They removed layers of material from workpieces by melting and vaporizing the material using electrical pulses. They also managed to solve the problem of limited conductivity of polymers by adding thin titanium plates to the parts.
As part of the study, experts analyzed the three-dimensional structure of the composite using computed tomography. They found that the developed technology made it possible to process polymers, but the wrong choice of mode led to melting and destruction of the composite surface. Experts are currently determining the optimal process settings.
“With the widespread introduction of polymer composite materials into the field of construction and special engineering, it is important to develop and apply technologically effective processing methods. Masters and young scientists from the Advanced Engineering School have established basic principles explaining the influence of processing modes on surface quality.
