Researchers from Queen Mary University of London have discovered a new form of long-term acute respiratory viral infection. It was not known before. The results were presented in the journal eClinicalMedicine (part of the Lancet journal group)

The authors asked more than 10,000 people to report 16 symptoms commonly experienced with long-term COVID-19, such as fatigue, shortness of breath, pain and dizziness. They then compared how common these symptoms were among three groups: people who reported having coronavirus, those who reported another acute respiratory infection (those who tested negative for COVID-19), and those who reported no infection.

“Our study found that all symptoms examined were more common in people who had previously had COVID-19. But they also occurred in people with respiratory infections unrelated to coronavirus,” the authors wrote. “In other words, our findings point to the presence of ‘prolonged cold’: currently unrecognized long-term health consequences from colds, flu, or other respiratory infections such as pneumonia.”

Some of the most common symptoms of a long-term cold include cough, stomach ache, and diarrhea. These symptoms were reported an average of 11 weeks after infection.

“Although initial severe infection appears to increase the risk of developing long-term symptoms, our study does not yet tell us why some people experience long-term symptoms and others do not. Researchers suggest that lack of awareness or common symptoms such as ‘long-lasting cold’ or ‘long-running flu’ He added that even the lack of a term hinders the diagnosis of these conditions.
