At the Rheumatology Research Institute that bears his name. The scientific director of the eponymous Research Institute of Rheumatology told socialbites.ca that Nasonova was trying to create a technology to personalize arthritis treatment. Nasonova, President of the All-Russian public organization “Russian Association of Rheumatologists”, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Evgeniy Nasonov.
“Making therapy more personal is very important to us. We have a lot of medicines, but unfortunately we prescribe them empirically. “We roughly understand the general patterns of the development of inflammation, but it can occur differently in each patient and we do not always know exactly how to choose the right drug for the patient,” explained the academician.
According to Nasonov, the technology will be a combination of clinical experience and molecular biological research, that is, analysis of the patient’s DNA.
“This is a study on the polymorphism of the genes of various pro-inflammatory mediators. We hope to be able to predict the effect of a particular drug based on the data. These studies are carried out all over the world. But so far there has been no progress that would allow these methods to enter clinical practice,” shared the expert.
