Sydney airport authorities attempted to smuggle a large shipment of cocaine worth $40 million into Australia. In this respect reports Australian Federal Police (AFP).

Five members of a Sydney crime syndicate have been detained on suspicion of links to a major drug cartel. The criminals were exposed on October 7 when they accepted a cocaine shipment from South Africa; Five bags of cocaine, each weighing 20 kg, were seized from the suspects; The drugs were hidden in the trunk of a passenger plane.

“The cocaine shipment may have been sold in 100,000 separate street transactions with an estimated value of $40 million,” the police department said.

Law enforcement had tracked down the drug dealers a year earlier; Investigators found the gang consisted of at least five people: two Sydney airport employees, a driver and two intermediaries. They all face life imprisonment.

Marseille police had previously mistakenly discovered 78 kilos of marijuana were found in the traffic violator’s vehicle.
