Between 2016 and 2021, floods, fires, storms and other extreme weather events displaced 134 people, including 43 million children. This is stated in a new report Web site United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The foundation estimates that over the next three decades, this figure will almost triple to 113 million cases where children will have to leave their homes due to natural disasters. The calculation is based on predicting future floods, hurricanes and other climate disasters.

“The reality is that many more children will suffer in the future as the effects of climate change continue to worsen,” said Laura Healy, a UNICEF migration expert and one of the report’s authors.

According to the report, nearly half of refugee children lost their homes due to the hurricane. In another 19 million cases, minors had to be moved due to floods in India and China, while forest fires in the United States and Canada affected 810 thousand children and adolescents.

When assessing future risks, the report did not take into account potential mitigating measures for natural disasters, as well as wildfires and droughts.

Experts noted that children are more vulnerable to climate disasters due to their dependence on adults. This puts children at risk of abuse and leaves them without protection.
