Alexander Lysenko, the mayor of the Ukrainian city of Sumy, on suspicion of bribery, has been detained with the possibility of being released on bail by the country’s Anti-Corruption Court. This was reported by the Public TV channel.

Lysenko remained in custody for two months, until December 2, 2023. There is a chance of being released on bail of three million hryvnia ($81.8 thousand).

Law enforcement authorities accuse Lysenko and Alexander Zhurba, director of the infrastructure department of the Sumy City Council, of accepting bribes in the amount of more than two million hryvnia ($57.6 thousand).

October 3 law enforcement detained Mayor of the Ukrainian city of Sumy and head of the local infrastructure department. According to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the officials were detained while accepting the bribe.

According to intelligence services, the head of the region, together with an accomplice, “laid tribute” to one of the city companies. They wanted to buy two million hryvnias (more than 54 thousand dollars) from a company specializing in waste removal. In case of refusal, the authorities threatened the company owners with creating artificial obstacles to conducting their business.
