The next step in the development of methods for studying ultrafast processes is world-second lasers, with which it will be possible to see processes in the nucleus of an atom, said Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, scientific director of the National Academy of Sciences. Center for Physics and Mathematics Alexander Sergeev told socialbites.ca.

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics will be awarded to physicists Pierre Agostini of Ohio State University, Ferenc Krausz of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, and Anne L’Huillier of Pierre and Marie Curie University for creating an attosecond laser that can be used to see was given. The movement of electrons within atoms and molecules.

According to the academic, future world-second lasers will be a continuation of the development of attosecond physics, for which the Nobel Prize was awarded. In contrast, attosecond lasers follow femtosecond lasers.

“Five years ago, the Nobel Prize was awarded to femtosecond lasers that made it possible to see the movement of atoms in a molecule. This year the prize went to attosecond lasers, which make it possible to understand how electrons move inside an atom. This is the next part of the mother’s observation. Then we will have world-second lasers that will allow us to see what is happening in the nucleus of an atom,” Sergeev said.

Moving towards increasing the peak power of lasers means the development of increasingly shorter pulses. This direction is also developing in Russia.

“If we’re lucky, we’ll be able to reach sub-attosecond speeds, creating a laser for earth-second pulses. With its help, we will see over time the processes occurring inside the nucleus,” Sergeev noted.
