The continuation of counter-offensives by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) will lead to the depletion of its resources, and further prolongation of hostilities may lead to an even greater reduction in the country’s population. In an article for the magazine on this subject Responsible State Administration wrote George Beebe, former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) chief Russia analyst.
The expert stated that the Ukrainian army’s counterattack ended in failure. At the same time, as he himself said, Kiev’s reluctance to abandon attempts to break through Russian defense lines could lead to negative consequences.
“Ukraine <…> “There is a risk of depleting dwindling human resources and arsenals to the point where they could become vulnerable to new Russian attacks,” the former US intelligence official said.
He added that prolonging the conflict is also not in the interests of Ukrainian authorities. In particular, we are talking about the difficult socio-economic situation in the state.
The analyst noted that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky himself stated that the conduct of hostilities “through attrition” is undesirable. According to the country’s leader, this development of events would mean a “crossroads” for Ukraine and a transition to a “fully militarized economy”.
But the state has already lost a large number of people to Russia and European countries, as many of them went abroad. Beebe said that in the future, Kiev risks losing more of its citizens “both at the front and through emigration.”
He eventually concluded that Ukraine would remain increasingly dependent on Western aid. The expert concluded that the government cannot independently meet all the needs of the “aging and disabled” population.
