Scientists from the University of Würzburg discovered eight storage chambers in the pyramid of Sahura. Since Sahura’s tomb served as a construction model for the pharaohs of the 5th dynasty, the discovery will allow us to better understand the structure of the remaining pyramids. This was reported by SciTechDaily.
Pyramid of Sahure, the second king of the 5th Dynasty, around 2400 BC. It was the first burial complex of the necropolis in Abusir. It began to be discovered in the 19th century. In 1836, British archaeologist John Perring noticed a closed, impassable corridor. He believed it led to landfills.
The discovery of modern scientists confirmed his prediction. Eight storage chambers were discovered during the reconstruction of the pyramid, which was necessary to prevent its collapse. During their work, the scientists used cutting-edge technologies, including 3D laser scanning using GeoSLAM’s portable LiDAR ZEB Horizon device. This allowed them to create a complete map of the narrow corridors and rooms inside the pyramid.
Although the northern and southern parts of the warehouses were heavily damaged, especially the ceiling, remnants of the original walls and floors remained. The discovery and restoration of the repositories is expected to revolutionize views on the historical development of the pyramids.
