Austrian microbiologists from the University of Vienna, with the participation of colleagues from the USA, have identified groups of bacteria that help plants survive during periods of drought. To work published In the scientific journal Nature Communications.

Soil microorganisms play an important role in ecosystems. It contributes to soil fertility, helps plants absorb nutrients, and affects climate by determining whether soil stores or releases carbon dioxide.

Scientists have developed a new method to observe bacterial activity during periods without long-term rainfall.

By modeling different climatic conditions, experts have identified a particularly drought-tolerant bacterium of the genus Streptomyces that becomes more common in dry soils. Its filamentous form allows the microorganism to penetrate the pores of the soil and allow plants to access water and nutrients from distant sources.

Study results showed that these microorganisms also reduce carbon emissions by helping sequester carbon in the soil.
