Doctors at the Royal Hospital in the United Kingdom diagnosed a stroke in a 27-year-old girl who mistook her symptoms for the effects of alcohol. The Englishwoman believed that her sudden confusion and blurred vision was due to an ingredient in her cocktail or that she had drunk too much. In this respect reports TimesNewsUK.
Joanna Whitelaw, from Edinburgh, was celebrating a friend’s engagement with friends when she felt her body “suddenly go numb” and her vision blurry. Friends escorted Joanna out of the pub, fearing her drink had been drugged. The girl spent the rest of the night at home feeling nauseous.
When Joanna woke up in the morning, she noticed the vision in her right eye was still blurry and called an ambulance. After three CT scans and an MRI, doctors at the Royal Infirmary discovered he had suffered a left-side stroke. This is an acute lesion of the microvessels of the brain on the left side of the head, while external signs of the disease appear on the right side of the body. Further studies revealed that the stroke was caused by an undiagnosed ventricular septal defect. This condition is a type of heart defect in which there is an abnormal opening between the heart’s main pumping chambers, called ventricles.
It is known that age, high blood pressure, smoking, excess weight, sedentary lifestyle and diabetes increase the risk of stroke. It is noted that the girl regularly visits the gym, leads a healthy lifestyle and rarely drinks alcohol. She also did not notice any symptoms consistent with heart disease.
A few days after her diagnosis, Joanna had surgery to close the hole in her heart. The girl is currently undergoing physical therapy sessions and working to restore mobility on the right side of her body.
