Spanish scientists from the Bioengineering Institute of Catalonia have developed a cheap and fast way to assess the severity of coronavirus disease. To do this, they analyzed the cough sounds of Covid-19 patients. To work published In the scientific journal European Respiratory Journal (ERJ).

Current Covid diagnostic tools rely mainly on expensive, high-tech imaging techniques such as radiography, ultrasound and computed tomography. That’s why doctors need a more accessible way to assess patients’ conditions both in the hospital and at home.

Researchers examined the cough sounds of 70 Covid-19 patients who were hospitalized within the first 24 hours after infection. Acoustic analysis of the recordings showed significant differences depending on the severity of infection.

The results showed that the cough sound could relatively accurately classify mild, moderate and severe forms of COVID-19.

The study authors explained that the cough test could serve the dual purpose of early detection of severe cases of COVID-19 and remote monitoring of disease progression, including assessment of potential complications.
