The initial stages of team burnout in the workplace may go unnoticed even by people knowledgeable about it, in which case they have to deal with more serious consequences. Daria Agliullina, head of IT recruitment at Tochka, told socialbites.ca.

The first warning sign is a sarcastic attitude towards your responsibilities, colleagues or clients.

“This signal is often noticed in communication: more conflict situations, irritability and outbursts of anger arise. “For example, an employee may be disturbed even by the coffee his colleague spilled,” he said.

Decreased performance can also be an indicator of burnout.

“In this case, work results deteriorate significantly, for example, a previously effective employee does not fulfill KPIs, ignores the agreements and requests of colleagues,” the expert added.

Symptoms of burnout also include severe forgetfulness.

“Everything is clear here: the employee cancels important meetings, is late, forgets to complete important daily tasks,” the expert said.

The fourth signal is low interest in work and apathy.

“The employee becomes indifferent to current projects, hardly participates in team discussions, and the attitude towards work becomes formalized. “He can also often focus on the shortcomings of the job,” he emphasized.

Finally, devaluing one’s accomplishments can also be a sign of burnout.

“In personal meetings, job-related presentations, or performance evaluations (mostly summarizing work results for six months), the employee downplays the importance of his job. In such situations, people often feel the urge to change their career path 180 degrees. “However, HR professionals should take into account that such a desire is most likely a consequence of the current situation and therefore should work carefully on this issue,” he concluded.

According to Agliullina, the company needs to have a separate team that creates tools for a supportive environment within the team. Ways to prevent burnout include: The opportunity to consult a psychologist; discount system for employees; Possibility of paid leave.
