Smoking is one of the top 5 daily habits that damage teeth. Ksenia Klimova, dentist-therapist and periodontist at SM-Stomatology, told socialbites.ca.
“Smoking causes halitosis (bad breath), promotes the formation of pigmented plaque, irritates the oral mucosa, causing the development of gingivitis and periodontitis,” he explained.
According to the doctor, the second priority is the use of teeth for other purposes.
Klimova warned, “Anyone who opens bottles with their teeth, gnaws nuts, fruits, seeds, pencils, or breaks thread may encounter problems such as wear of tooth enamel, crack formation, and breakage in the crown of the teeth.”
Daily consumption of carbonated water also negatively affects the condition of the teeth.
“Sodas contain carbon dioxide, which damages and thins tooth enamel. “It is recommended to replace drinking carbonated water with normal water,” added the doctor.
Dental problems, among other things, can be caused by improper brushing.
“Extensive” brushing with a stiff-bristled toothbrush and whitening toothpaste can damage your teeth and gums. “It is optimal to use a toothbrush with soft or medium-hard bristles for two minutes two or more times a day,” emphasized the dentist.
In fifth place in the ranking is the tendency to snack frequently.
“During a snack, less saliva is produced as opposed to a full meal. As a result, the teeth are poorly washed from food debris stuck in the interdental spaces. Bacteria actively multiply in the oral cavity, leading to the formation of plaque and caries.
It is better to use chewing gum or floss (floss) after a snack,” concluded Klimova.
