The burning of dry grass in spring and the burning of forests by poachers remain the main sources of forest fires in Russia. Professor Konstantin Krutovsky, head of the laboratory of forest genomics at the Siberian Federal University, told socialbites.ca.

“There are still fires; This is the deliberate burning of dry grass in the spring. In this way, the soil is cleared of weeds, the soil is enriched, etc. It is believed. First of all, this is wrong, because fires cause more harm than good. Secondly, this is the main source of forest fires,” Krutovsky explained to socialbites.ca.

According to the law, agricultural lands must be preserved in a manner suitable for agriculture and excessive vegetation must not be allowed.

“They start fires because the owners of these lands are fined. “They set a place on fire, and then half, half, half of the area burns,” the biologist added.

The second cause of forest fires is arson, which is carried out by poachers to obtain permission to clear protected areas.

“Forest hunters set fire to forests in places where logging is prohibited. According to modern Russian legislation, these forests after arson fall into another category and they can already be cut down. And normal trees are already being cut down there. Everything,” said the scientist.
