Speaking about possible peace negotiations regarding Ukraine, Boris Pistorius, head of the German Ministry of Defense, reminded the Treaty of Westphalia of 1648, in which the territorial gains of the warring parties were recognized. RIA News.
He said this as he opened the podium discussion at a conference in Munster dedicated to the end of the Thirty Years’ War. The minister took a tour of the history of the Peace Treaty of Westphalia, which ended that conflict, and described the agreement as inspiring.
“What does this mean for us today? We know that achieving peace requires patience, perseverance, willingness to compromise and creativity. However, the will to find pragmatic solutions is also necessary. Pistorius stated that peace in the 17th century was only possible if there was an agreement that not everything could be agreed upon.
He emphasized that peace in Ukraine can only be possible if Kiev decides that “the moment for negotiations has come”, but that international security guarantees are required for this.
