The vast majority of people in Europe are exposed to bisphenol A (BPA), a dangerous chemical that causes cancer, immune and endocrine system disorders and reduced fertility, according to a new study from the European Environment Agency (EEA). The report was published on Web site AEA.

BPA is used in a wide variety of products, from plastic food containers to bottles to drinking water pipes.

According to new EEA data, almost 100% of people in the 11 EU countries surveyed were exposed to BPA at levels above safe health thresholds.

Bisphenol A and two other bisphenols (bisphenol S and F) were measured in the urine of 2,756 adults from Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal and Switzerland. The countries were selected to represent all EU regions.

In countries participating in BPA biomonitoring, excess levels range from 71% to 100%, with an average of 92%.

The EEA therefore stated that population exposure to BPA in Europe is very high and poses a potential threat to public health.
