Scientists find a link between decreased interest in sex and premature death in men

Japanese scientists from Yamagata University found a link between life expectancy and maintenance of sexual interest in men over 40. To work published In the scientific journal PLOS One.

Experts examined the results of a survey of 8,558 men and 12,411 people from Yamagata Prefecture from 2009 to 2015. Participants answered questions about their sexual interests and other habits. The volunteers also underwent annual physical exams, which took into account their smoking and drinking habits, education, how often people laughed and other considerations.

503 participants died during the study; 67 from cardiovascular diseases and 162 from cancer.

8.3% of men reported no interest in sex. In the same group, the rate of premature death from any cause was significantly higher compared with their peers who remained sexually active. At the same time, men who were attracted to the opposite sex had a higher life expectancy, even in the presence of bad habits.

In women, the presence or absence of sexual desire was found to have no effect on the mortality rate.
