Khumbulani Mudau, head of the South African National Space Agency, and Chen Xiaodong, the Chinese Ambassador to South Africa, signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation on September 1 for the establishment of the International Lunar Research Station. This was reported in the Chinese edition Global Times.

It is stated that before this, Russia and China invited all relevant countries to participate in the project for the creation of the International Lunar Research Station, which will consist of a space station in lunar orbit, a research complex on the lunar surface and a robotic park.

According to Hu Changchun, China’s Ambassador to the African Union, space cooperation is an important part of the Belt and Road Initiative. Cooperation with China in the space sector is expected to allow South Africa to increase its own satellite count.
