Scientists from the University of Surrey (England) found that depression is a risk factor for the development of type II diabetes. Results presented news portal Diabetes Times.

Previously, scientists found that diabetics were twice as likely to develop depressive disorder. But it was unclear which of these two diseases appeared first and caused the latter to develop. To find out, the authors analyzed the genetic data of hundreds of thousands of people and concluded that patients with a history of depression are at increased risk of type II diabetes, not vice versa.

Researchers have also identified seven genetic variants that contribute to the development of both type II diabetes and depression. Common genes for the two diseases are involved in insulin secretion and inflammation in the brain, pancreas, or adipose tissue.

According to experts, the discovery will help develop new tactics to prevent the disease from developing.
