Singapore established the Coastal Protection and Flood Resilience Institute (CFI Singapore). Science Center will seek long-term solutions to sea level rise due to climate change, informs Reuters.

Scientists predict that the mean sea level will rise by about a meter by the end of this century, but the effect may be stronger due to stronger rainfall, strong tides and storms.

Almost a third of Singapore’s land is located less than five meters above sea level, and the average annual precipitation is about 2.5 thousand mm, making the island city-state vulnerable to flooding.

The country had previously invested heavily in improving drainage and installed a flood prevention system. At CFI Singapore, their main task was to ensure that land-strapped Singapore did not lose any of its territories due to the ocean’s advance on land.

The research center has already launched research projects to explore new engineering options, including flexible dams, as well as natural solutions that use mangroves and seaweed to protect coastlines.
