Eli Ratner, Pentagon vice-president for security in the Indo-Pacific region, said China refused to maintain permanent military communication channels with the United States for political reasons. Words lead the way Defense News.
Ratner recalled that Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin has repeatedly said that Washington is determined to open lines of communication with Beijing. However, according to Ratner, China has been opening and closing these lines “like a circuit breaker” for political reasons over the past few years.
Austin’s aide said that sharing of information about the vision in strategic areas such as cyber, space and nuclear weapons should continue. The expert also emphasized that the parties should be ready for communication in case of a possible crisis.
Ratner added that the US Department of Defense hopes that China will not bring the situation to the point of a Caribbean crisis.
A Pentagon spokesman reminded that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo visited China recently, but Washington advocates that the military units of the two countries also meet with each other.
