Agronomist warns against consuming green tomatoes

Green tomatoes are dangerous for human health and therefore should not be eaten. In a radio interview about it Sputnik said agronomist, agronomist Vladimir Vikulov.

According to Vikulov, the drop in night temperature causes disease in tomatoes. The use of chemicals can protect tomatoes from disease, but many gardeners choose not to do this and harvest the tomatoes when they are not ripe. Green tomatoes contain the alkaloid solanine, which is poisonous and can cause serious damage to health in a certain concentration. If a green tomato is not dangerous for an adult man, the use of unripe tomatoes by children, post-ill people or the elderly can lead to disappointment, and many of these fruits will cause serious poisoning. For this reason, the agronomist said that fresh unripe tomatoes should not be consumed.

Vikulov also emphasized that cooking reduces the concentration of solanine in vegetables, since it is largely destroyed during pickling and brining.
