Indian astronomers from Christ University in Bangalore have discovered a new ring galaxy 1.8 billion light-years from Earth. The star system was named DJ0240. To work published on the arXiv scientific portal.

According to the researchers, the galaxy they discovered probably belongs to a rare class of galaxies with polar rings (RPR) of gas and stars. To date, scientists have been aware of more than 400 candidates for such space structures, but subsequent observations have confirmed that only 10 of them are true GPAs.

Analyzing the resulting images, the team found that the DJ0240 ring is three times wider than its host galaxy and differs from it by its blue hue. The blue color indicates the star formation processes going on in the ring formation.

Indian astronomers described the discovery of a rare new galaxy as a happy accident.
