Researchers at Columbia University found that flavonol-rich foods can help maintain a good memory longer. The results of the study are presented as follows: magazine PNAS.
The study’s authors recruited more than 1,000 elderly people who were divided into two groups. For three years, scientists monitored their cognitive health. At the same time, while the first group was accustomed to the use of dietary placebo tablets, the second group was supplemented with 500 ml tablets per day.
As a result, the memory of the second group improved by 16% since the beginning of the experiment. Flavonols, a subclass of flavonoids, are substances of plant origin that trigger the work of certain enzymes in the human body, therefore they improve memory. For example, they are found in apples, sea buckthorn, onions, tea, dark chocolate, red wine.
“This study is just the beginning of an important conversation about the phenomenon of human memory. The results make it clear that a variety of nutrients are required to strengthen the brain,” the authors write.
