Researchers from the Korea Institute of Basic Sciences (IBS) have discovered neurons in the brain that control the body’s metabolism. The results of the study are presented as follows: magazine nature metabolism.

The hypothalamus is responsible for food consumption and satiety. The study’s authors found a cluster of GABRA5 neurons in this part of the brain that affects gamma-aminobutyric acid. GABA is the most important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system of humans and other mammals. Aminobutyric acid plays a role in neurotransmitter and metabolic processes in the brain.

The authors used a mouse model. First, the activity of neurons was reduced in rodents, leading to accumulation of adipose tissue and weight gain. Mice successfully lost weight when GABRA5 neurons were upregulated. Thus, GABRA5 neurons act as a weight control switch.

Experts will continue to study this group of neurons. In the future, this discovery may lay the foundation for the treatment of obesity and other pathological conditions associated with metabolism.
