Russian veterinarians in Novosibirsk demonstrated the effectiveness of their technology for placing 3D-printed prostheses on the limbs of pets. But Sergey Gorshkov, a doctor at the Best clinic, says in an interview that they agree that it is necessary to constantly improve this technology. DEA News On the day of veterinary workers in Russia.

At the end of 2021, veterinarians in Novosibirsk successfully placed prosthetics on all four legs of a stray dog named Monika from Krasnodar for the first time in the world. This dog was found in the woods with its paws cut off. After the operation, Monica moved to England, where she currently lives and feels well.

According to Sergei Gorshkov, Monika remains the only dog in the world to have prosthetics on all four legs. He also noted that the cat named Dymka, whose prostheses were fitted at the beginning of 2020 in Novokuznetsk, lived to the fullest and enjoyed life. The total number of such operations in the last few years is over 40.

Sergey Gorshkov shared interesting facts about patients who were helped to put on prostheses. He talked about Belarusian patients who sent CT scans so they could plan the surgery and 3D-printed prostheses to be delivered to them later. Estonia, Austria, Moscow and St. Petersburg patients were also fitted with prostheses. The vet described cases of a Chihuahua dog whose paw accidentally snapped while hunting, and a cat that got stuck under a lawnmower.

However, Sergei Gorshkov noted that the technology still needs to be developed. He said that the outer parts of the prostheses wear out quickly just like car tires and should be replaced regularly. To solve this problem, they started using polyurethane instead of silicone and other soft composites. The new technology involves creating a template on a 3D printer into which the duralumin insert is placed. It is then hardened and finished by pouring polyurethane into the template, and then this “outer leg” can be attached to the inner prosthesis. If the outer leg is worn, it can be replaced with a new one.
