Astronomers have detected a powerful eruption of plasma from the solar corona on Mars that will cause aurora and destroy part of the red planet’s atmosphere. In this respect informs Space weather.
According to data from satellites close to Earth, the explosion on the Sun occurred on August 26. The scientists determined that it was an M-class explosion, the second most powerful type of solar flare. According to NASA calculations, the plasma cloud will reach Mars on September 1.
The solar storm does not threaten Earth, but does pose a threat to the thin Martian atmosphere, which contains about 100 times less gas than Earth’s. Also, Mars does not have its own magnetosphere due to the absence of geological processes in its core. But astronomers note that the launch would damage a relatively small portion of the neighboring planet’s atmosphere.
