The total weight of compulsory school textbooks for first-year students in Russian schools in 2023 will be about 2.6 kg. Combined with the weight of the backpack, it will load up to 3.6kg for children who have to carry all the books at once. This was reported to Gazeta.ru in the BestDoctor group of companies.
As the experts of the organization calculate, the heaviest volume in the trunk of a first-year student will be the “Literary Reading” (372 g), consisting of two parts. This is followed by “The World Around” in two parts (359 g) and a handbook on fine arts (288 g). And the textbook on technology (226 g) will be the easiest. There are nine books in total in the list of compulsory textbooks.
BestDoctor pediatrician Tatyana Kashkina noted that in accordance with the requirements of Rospotrebnadzor, the weight of a school bag with textbooks and stationery should not exceed 10% of the child’s weight. And the recommended backpack weight for a freshman should not be more than 1.5 kg. The expert explained that excessive stress on the body can lead to curvature of the spine and compressions in the lower back.
