American scientists from the Stanford Prevention Research Center in California have debunked the “pint glass” stereotype, which suggests that alcohol intoxication makes other people seem more attractive than they really are. Sober people seem to be more likely to choose unattractive partners than drunk people. Article published In the scientific journal Journal of Alcohol and Drug Research (JSAD).
Thirty-six men over the age of 20 participated in the experiment. They were invited to the lab in pairs and asked to rate the attractiveness of other people in photos and videos. The subjects first had to answer questions after taking a small dose of alcohol, and after a while they had to pass the same test by drinking soft drinks.
The researchers concluded that being drunk does not make other people more beautiful or more attractive to the study participants. But after drinking alcohol, the volunteers were 1.71 times more likely to choose the most attractive candidates than when they were sober.
This means that sobriety helps people choose unattractive partners more often.
Principal investigator Dr. According to Molly Bowdring, the findings of the scientific study could be beneficial for psychotherapists and their patients. The expert noted the positive social impact of alcohol consumption, but warned against long-term problems associated with alcohol.
