British scientists from the Zoological Institute of the Zoological Society of London and the University of Oxford believe that if global temperatures increase by 3 °C, wild hyena dogs in Kenya will almost certainly disappear. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Global Change Biology.
African hyenas or hyena dogs live in areas south of the Sahara. Previous research has shown that the species is already suffering from habitat loss and diseases spread by humans. Predators could become extinct in the future due to climate change, according to a new study.
The scientists analyzed the risk factors for wild dogs using computer simulations of various temperature conditions. Calculations showed that with an increase in temperature by 1 °C, the number of animals would decrease by about 40%, while with a warming of 3 °C, the probability of complete extinction of the population is very high.
High temperatures limit hunting opportunities and increase the risk of bacterial and viral infections, according to zoologists. Due to the rising temperatures, fewer offspring will survive to adulthood as their mothers won’t be able to find enough food to feed their young.
