Scientists from Aalto University (Finland) found that people who naturally prefer to go to bed late have poor health habits that are linked to lower wages. The results of the study were as follows: published in Economics and Human Biology.
The data the scientists used were taken from a population-based cohort study of Finns in 1966. As a result, the authors learned about the chronotype, habits and salaries of the 5,000 participants. Chronotype – individual, evolutionarily developed and genetically predetermined features of the body’s circadian rhythms. It is customary to distinguish larks, owls and people of mixed chronotype.
The researchers found that the presence of the evening chronotype had an indirect effect on wages. People who stay up late are more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors such as less physical activity, smoking and drinking more alcohol. They are also more likely to suffer from insomnia. This affects their wages; true, less than that of larks.
In the future, the authors will conduct another study to establish the cause-effect relationships of this model.
