The Swedish government does not yet plan to supply Gripen fighters to the Ukrainian conflict zone. In an interview with the TV channel about this TV4 said Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
As the cabinet chief put it, Stockholm is currently in the “wrong situation”. He reminded that Sweden is still not a NATO member and now has to think about its own security.
Answering the relevant question, Kristersson said, “We will do everything to support them (Kiev officials – socialbites.ca) in aviation, but so far there is no new obligation to transfer Swedish aircraft to Ukraine.”
The Prime Minister also said that recently Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky again called on the Swedish government to put the Gripen on the battlefield. This happened during the head of state’s visit to Stockholm on August 19.
But according to Kristersson, authorities need to strike a balance between Kiev’s desires and the kingdom’s needs. As a result, Sweden promised to organize only the production of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles in Ukraine, but the head of government himself expressed great respect for Zelensky’s desire to have “everything and more”.
“We are now part of the so-called F-16 coalition, with which we cooperate with 14 countries to provide Ukraine’s aviation capabilities,” he added.
