Archaeologists from the University of Pristina have found evidence of the Dardan origin of the Byzantine emperor Justinian the Great (527-565 AD) in Kosovo. It has been reported archeonews.

During excavations in Ulpiana (Kosovo), scientists discovered a monumental inscription lying in the central part of the basilica. It is dedicated to the Byzantine Emperor Justinian.Urbem Dardanya“, i.e.” from the city in Dardania “. The Roman-Illyrian city of Ulpiana was the political, financial and cultural center of the Dardanian kingdom.

According to archaeologists, the inscription indicates that Emperor Justinian belonged to the Dardanians living in Kosovo and southern Serbia.

Also, the mention of Dardania shows that the Dardanians were not assimilated by the Romans and did not lose their identity.

“This is very important given the large number of articles and studies in the archaeological literature trying to prove that the Dardanians lost their identity, became Romanized and disappeared during the Middle Ages. “This discovery is of great importance in this respect,” he said.

Justinian I, nicknamed the Great, is credited with annexing parts of the former Western Roman Empire to Byzantium. At his direction, the Roman code of laws was also revised, which was then called the Justinian law. During the emperor’s reign, the first plague epidemic occurred, which claimed the lives of half the Byzantine population. There are many hypotheses about its origin: some sources point to Greek, others to Slavic, Armenian or Arabic.
