Researchers from Yale University (USA) discovered that people with paranoid tendencies have a different memory: usually, when people notice something new in their environment, it helps them better remember what was going on. Paranoids don’t do that. The results of the work of scientists have been published. magazine Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science.
“People often associate memory deficits with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, but memory dysfunction is also a key feature of psychotic spectrum disorders like schizophrenia. A growing body of research is pointing to similar memory deficits in people with paranoid tendencies,” he said.
450 people participated in the study, they passed a memory test as well as a psychological questionnaire. During the test, participants viewed a series of images of everyday objects. These images can be new (never seen before), old (seen before), or similar (very similar to old, but with minor differences). Participants were asked to mark which group the photographs belonged to. The subjects then talked about the pictures they remembered best.
Analysis of the results showed that people prone to paranoia responded worse to the memory impulse described above – when they saw new objects, they did not remember the image any better as ordinary volunteers did.
