Genotek specialists, together with employees of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) and students of Sirius High School, found with DNA on the shelves of shops, local food outlets and markets in Sochi, Adler, Krasnodar Territory. They sell chickens under the guise of turtle meat. This was reported to socialbites.ca in Genotek.
The team also found that the carp was sold as rams, while the tentacles of a giant squid were sold by vendors as octopus. It also turned out that flounder and pike caviar and products sold under the guise of “pickled snails” are in reality ordinary imitations created from gelling agents.
The researchers checked to what extent the information indicated on the packaging corresponded to the real content: for this, DNA was isolated from the products, a specific fragment (cytochromosidase I gene), then sequenced (“read”).
Students from the “Sirius” High School took a special role in the study. During project work, team members mastered DNA extraction, PCR, Sanger sequencing and gained skills in working with genetic databases.
