Researchers from the University of British Columbia discovered that three types of masculinity guide men in relationships: neo-traditional, egalitarian, and progressive. The results of the study were: presented in the journal Social Science & Medicine.
The researchers’ conclusions are based on in-depth interviews with 92 heterosexual men aged 19 to 43 from various cultural backgrounds.
Neo-traditional (men mostly adhere to traditional gender roles), egalitarian (striving for more equal partnerships with an emphasis on reciprocity), and progressive (working to create gender equality in partnerships through regular, focused remedial conversations).
The researchers reported increased mental well-being of men who actively promote gender equality and social justice. At the same time, neo-traditionalists face isolation or criticism from others, which can negatively affect their mental health. The study also found that some men with an egalitarian style still have trouble understanding the concept of achieving gender equality by dividing housework strictly by 50 to 50 percent.
