Researchers at Ritsumeikan University have found that resistance training slows skin aging. Research published in the journal scientific reports.

Researchers compared the effects of aerobic training and strength training (with weights) on skin aging in 56 healthy, inactive middle-aged Japanese women. Participants trained twice a week for four months under the supervision of qualified trainers.

Researchers have found that both types of exercise improve skin elasticity and structure of the upper dermis. However, weight training also increased her thickness. This was associated with increased activity of genes responsible for the production of proteoglycans, including biglycan (BGN), which helps maintain skin firmness.

Scientists believe that exercise can also improve skin health by increasing blood circulation. Therefore, protecting the skin from the sun, quitting smoking, and exercising alongside a healthy diet can be an effective strategy for preventing premature skin aging.
