In a study by scientists from Peking University published in the journal Journal of Affective Disorders (TJAD)An association has been established between early onset of sexual activity, multiple sexual partners, and depressive disorder.
When people have sexual intercourse between the ages of 12-14, the risk of mental illness increases. However, the causal relationship of the phenomenon has not been established. Previously, scientists put forward a theory that people who were initially prone to depression began sexual activity earlier.
In the current study, the authors used information from large databases. The sample size for age analysis at first relationship was 406,457. The authors also decided to test how the number of sexual partners affected the development of depression.
Analysis of the data revealed that early sexual intercourse and having more sexual partners increase the risk of developing depression. These effects were consistent across the different assay methods. The results also showed that each additional delay in the first sexual intercourse was associated with a 6% reduction in the risk of major depressive disorder.
