Scientists from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have developed a geothermal heating system for residential buildings. The results of the research were published in the journal PNRPU Bulletin. Applied Ecology Urbanism».

Geothermal heating is an environmentally friendly type of heat source that uses the energy of the environment. This type of heating system consists of two parts, the external and internal circuit. It is a pipe with a heat carrier located under the ground. At a depth of 0.4 to 3 meters, the heat carrier takes the temperature of the earth, equal to -15 to +20 degrees Celsius, and enters the building where the heat pump is installed. He, in turn, raises the temperature to 60 degrees and, using a circulation pump, sends the heated coolant through the pipes of the internal circuit.

The main advantage of this method of space heating is its environmental friendliness, as there is no combustion process. It is also safe, economical and durable as the system does not use explosive and flammable fuels (on average, the geothermal heating system lasts 25 years, the gas heating system 15 years). According to scientists, the use of geothermal heating instead of gas heating in the future will save a significant part of the budget of Russian residents living in residential buildings.

“In our case, it is enough to immerse the pipes with the coolant to a depth of 1.6 m, the average temperature in the coldest month will be + 2.4 degrees. Freon, antifreeze is most often used as a coolant. In such installations, water is not used in winter due to low temperatures, moreover, it starts to destroy underground pipes over time. And the heat pump saves you up to 75% on the cost of heating your home and hot water. The remaining 25% are usage costs for electricity,” says Lyubov Khorosheva, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering and Materials Science at PNRPU.

Ekaterina Gurina, a graduate student at the Department of Construction, explains that according to the calculations of the Gazprom gas distribution calculator, the installation of a gas device will cost more than 340 thousand rubles, and the proposed option will cost more than 680 thousand rubles. Engineering and Materials Science, PNRPU. He added that the maintenance cost of geothermal heating, including utilities, would be 20% less than gas and that this method could pay for itself in nine years.

Formerly engineers in Perm developed electromagnetic suspension designed for vehicles with electromagnetic vibration damper.
