Consumption of bear meat may pose a threat of contamination with parasites, said Candidate of Life Medical Sciences, State Education University, Department of Therapy, Associate Professor Grant Shekhyan.

According to him, trichinella worms often “live” in such meat, able to penetrate all human muscles, including the heart.

“Bear meat is non-dietary, much fattier than pork, and has a distinctive flavor. The main danger is the possible infection of bear meat with trichinosis. According to various estimates, between 50 and 90 percent of bears are carriers of trichinella, which are small worms from the nematode order,” he said.

According to him, trichinella, getting into the intestines of a person, begins to multiply. In the first days after infection, the patient may experience nausea, heartburn, and diarrhea, later accompanied by symptoms ranging from fever, joint pain, and muscle weakness.

“All this can lead to death. With a relatively favorable course, this is a serious chronic disease that damages almost all muscle structures of the body, ”shekhyan concluded.
