Russian archaeologists discovered an ancient mausoleum containing a pavilion in Sevastopol. This was reported by the press service of the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IIMK).
“A unique building was discovered combining two types of buildings of ancient times: an exedra, that is, a cult arbor and a burial complex-mausoleum. The outer wall is covered with rustic blocks, decorative elements that make the building more attractive for visitors.”
The building is located in the southern suburbs of the ancient city of Tauric Chersonese. More than 20 tombs were found in the mausoleum, all of which may have belonged to a noble family. According to archaeologists, in the middle of the cellar in cremation pots, on the sides of the chambers there were burials of men – burials of women. Based on the found funerary items – dishes, ornaments, incense pots – such a conclusion was drawn. The gazebo was most likely designed to commemorate relatives.
The discovered mausoleum will be protected to prevent destruction and will be part of the historical and archaeological park “Tauric Chersonesos” being created.
