Doctors of the First Moscow State Medical University named after Sechenov have developed a minimally invasive and painless method for removing hemorrhoids by electrically cutting the tissues in a stream of argon gas. At the same time, the coagulation apparatus does not touch the tissues, which excludes infection of the wound or bleeding. This was reported to socialbites.ca by the press service of the university.
Doctors of the Faculty of Surgery No. 2 of the University Clinical Hospital of Sechenov University No. 4 were the first in Russia to use argon plasma coagulation, which acts gently on tissues without touching the device. The dissection of the node takes place with the help of electricity, but not in a normal environment, but in a stream of argon gas. In this case, an argon-plasma coagulant acts as a scalpel. Argon plasma torch strongly heats tissues: they literally burn, but do not emit smoke or odor. Such exposure destroys microbes, so the risk of infectious complications is minimal.

After the hemorrhoids are removed during the procedure, the vessels are closed, which reduces the risk of postoperative bleeding to almost zero. Efetov explained that the diameter of hemorrhoidal vessels is on average 2 mm, and argon plasma coagulation allows vessels to coagulate up to 5 mm.
Testing the procedure on patients showed significantly less pain syndrome compared to traditional monopolar coagulation, which is also a common treatment for hemorrhoids today – patients recorded their pain levels on a 10-point visual analog scale each day. They were able to leave the clinic the next day of treatment. Patent documents are currently being prepared.
