Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have found that diminished sexual satisfaction and erection problems in middle age can be a warning sign of future cognitive decline in men. The results of the research were published in the journal Gerontologist.
More than 800 middle-aged volunteers (about 50 years old) participated in the study – for 12 years the scientists collected data from neuropsychological testing and self-assessments of men’s sexual health. Satisfaction in terms of sexual health, potency of desire and erection were implied.
After analyzing the data, the scientists found an association between decreased sexual satisfaction, weaker erections, and future memory loss.
“Although we cannot establish a causal relationship, we can say that improvement in sexual satisfaction may actually lead to improvement in memory function. Doctors often tell people they need to exercise more and eat better. “Our research has shown that sexual satisfaction is also important to our health and overall quality of life.”
