Scientists from the University of Sydney found that by 2050, more than 800 million people worldwide will suffer from low back pain. His work has been published magazine Lancet Rheumatology.
The authors came to these conclusions by analyzing back pain data for the period from 1990 to 2020 – over 30 years this indicator has increased by an average of 60%. After 30 years, this figure will increase by 34% according to the calculation.
More than half a billion cases of low back pain were reported by doctors worldwide in 2020. This type of pain is one of the main causes of permanent disability in the world.
According to the authors, now people continue to use questionable treatment methods: bed rest, opioids or injections into the spine. Not only can they help solve the problem, they can slow healing and increase the risk of injury in the long run.
Low back pain is most common among women, regardless of age. If statistics are broken down by country, this disease mostly affects residents of the countries of Central Europe, Eastern Europe and Australasia (11100). The lowest prevalence was recorded in East Asia.
