Brain stimulation at a frequency of 40 Hz made it possible to alleviate the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease in mice. Reported by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Alzheimer’s disease is a serious neurodegenerative disease in which the memory and cognitive functions of the person are damaged, and in the later stages he completely loses his capacity and personality. The consequences of this disease are a heavy burden for both the patient and their relatives. Alzheimer’s disease is considered incurable, but scientists are at least looking for a way to alleviate the condition of patients or suppress symptoms.

Li-Hui Tsai and colleagues showed that 40 Hz gamma brainwave stimulation improved patients’ condition. The experiments were carried out on mice suffering from an analog of human Alzheimer’s disease. The rodents were divided into two groups: one group was subjected to vibrotherapy at this frequency for one hour a day for several weeks, and the second group was not subjected to any treatment. Stimulation was carried out using speakers placed under the cage, and in a preliminary study it was proven that vibration affects brain activity.

As a result, it was revealed that gamma wave stimulation not only improved motor function compared to the control group, but also reduced levels of phosphorylated tau protein, a feature of Alzheimer’s disease, prevented neuron death and reduced DNA damage in neurons.
