Scientists have created genetically modified chickens that lay eggs suitable for people allergic to egg white. In this respect informs Hiroshima University.
Egg allergy is one of the most common allergies in children. It passes by age 16 for almost everyone, but for some it continues into adulthood. Symptoms of an egg white allergy include vomiting, stomach cramps, breathing problems and swelling.

To get around this, the authors produced a knockout of the genes responsible for the synthesis of OVM. “Eggs laid by homozygous OVM knockout chickens had no obvious abnormalities. Egg white contained neither the normal OVM nor its shortened version. Plasmid vectors used for genome editing were only transiently present and did not integrate into the chicken genome.
