Atopic dermatitis is a chronic recurrent skin disease often accompanied by other unpleasant conditions such as allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, esophageal inflammation or food allergies. State Research Center Institute of Immunology ”FMBA of Russia Elena Fedenko.
“Atopic dermatitis is associated with allergies in 80% of patients. Often allergic rhinitis is combined with bronchial asthma. And in children, this is often accompanied by food allergies. Now more and more people are talking about the combination with eosinophilic esophagitis. This is an inflammation of the esophagus, gastrointestinal tract. The condition manifests itself as infiltration of the epithelium by eosinophils (a type of leukocytes – blood cells).
Most patients with atopic dermatitis have allergic comorbidities, that is, several of the above diseases may coexist in such patients.
“It has been proven that patients with atopic dermatitis are also characterized by the development of concomitant diseases from other organs. For example, they have a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease, which can lead to strokes and heart attacks. The allergist noted that they are more likely to develop atherosclerosis.
In addition, these patients are characterized by systemic connective tissue diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.
“Problems from the gastrointestinal tract are common – ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, which is more common in patients with atopic dermatitis than in the healthy population. These patients are also characterized by the development of vitiligo and alopecia and other diseases, and this is confirmed by recent studies, ”said Fedenko.
